◆ Dermatologist-Backed Protocol
Morning or Night?
When to Use Vitamin C
A dermatologist-reviewed breakdown of optimal Vitamin C application timing, backed by clinical evidence on photoprotection, skin biology, and real-world outcomes.
◆ The Science Verdict
Morning Wins — For Most Skin Types
Antioxidant defense + SPF synergy + 72-hour protection window make AM the clinically superior choice for 72% of skin types. Exceptions apply for very sensitive skin and specific derivatives.

The Science Explained
Why Morning Application Is Superior
☀️
Antioxidant Defense at Peak Exposure
UV radiation, pollution, IR radiation, and oxidative stress peak during daytime hours. Vitamin C applied in the AM creates a 6–8 hour antioxidant shield exactly when your skin needs it most. PM application provides antioxidant activity when exposure is minimal.
🛡️
SPF Potentiation Effect
The landmark Pinnell et al. 2001 study demonstrated that the CE Ferulic combination (Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid) provides 8× greater photoprotective capacity than LAA alone. This synergistic effect only works during UV exposure — i.e., during the day.
⏱️
72-Hour Protection Window
Once absorbed into the stratum corneum and upper dermis, Vitamin C provides up to 72 hours of antioxidant activity. Daily AM application maintains continuous photoprotective serum levels — a single missed day is not critical.
🌙
Night Skin is Already Protected
While skin does regenerate at night (cell turnover peaks ~2AM), this process benefits more from retinoids, peptides, and barrier repair ingredients. Using Vitamin C's antioxidant capacity at night means it's fighting minimal oxidative stress while its AM utility is maximal.
Personalized Timing Guide
Optimal Timing by Skin Type
🌿
Normal Skin
⏰ Morning
LAA's antioxidant defense pairs perfectly with SPF. Low pH is well-tolerated. Use 15–20% LAA at pH 2.5–3.5 in AM.
💧
Oily Skin
⏰ Morning
AM application prevents PM sebum from increasing oxidation. Lightweight water-based serums perform best on oily skin types.
🌸
Dry Skin
⏰ Evening Optional
Stable derivatives (MAP, AG) can be used PM if they complement your moisturiser. LAA derivatives tolerate PM better than pure LAA.
⚖️
Combination
⏰ Morning
Consistent AM application manages T-zone oxidation while SPF covers dry areas. Lightweight serum is key for balance.
🕊️
Sensitive / Rosacea
⏰ Evening (low-dose)
Sensitive types may prefer PM introduction at 2% THD or MAP — lower risk of AM UV interaction during acclimatization. Build to AM over 4–6 weeks.
Step-by-Step Protocol
The Optimal AM Vitamin C Routine
01
Gentle Cleanser
Low-pH cleanser (pH 4.5–6.5). Avoid stripping surfactants that raise skin pH — this could partially neutralize your incoming LAA.
02
Optional: pH-Prep Toner
If using pure LAA, a light acid toner or plain water can lower surface skin pH slightly. Not required for derivatives at near-neutral pH.
03
Vitamin C Serum
Apply 3–4 drops to slightly damp skin. Press gently rather than rubbing. Wait 60–90 seconds — do not rush to the next step.
04
Light Hydrating Serum (Optional)
Hyaluronic acid or niacinamide serum can follow, especially if using LAA which can be drying at higher concentrations.
05
Moisturiser
Seal everything in. Creates an occlusive environment that slows oxidation of LAA after application. Don't skip.
06
SPF 30–50+ (Non-negotiable)
Applied last, SPF must cover the Vitamin C layer. The CE Ferulic + SPF combination provides up to 8× greater photoprotection than SPF alone.
Myth vs. Science
Common Misconceptions — Debunked
❌ Myth: Vitamin C makes skin photosensitive in sunlight
✅ Science: Completely false. Vitamin C is a topical antioxidant that REDUCES UV damage by neutralizing free radicals. It makes your SPF MORE effective, not less.
❌ Myth: You must apply Vitamin C to dry skin only
✅ Science: Slightly damp skin can actually aid penetration of water-soluble LAA. Clean, slightly moist skin after gentle toning is optimal for most.
❌ Myth: Applying Vitamin C at night allows 'deeper absorption'
✅ Science: Skin doesn't have a "night mode" that improves absorption of topical antioxidants. The benefit of AM is the timed antioxidant release when UV/pollution exposure is highest.
❌ Myth: You can't use Vitamin C with moisturiser
✅ Science: Vitamin C should always be followed by moisturiser to seal in hydration, especially LAA which can be mildly drying. Apply serum → wait 60s → moisturise.
