What matters for oily skin
Oily skin rarely has a problem with vitamin C itself. The issues are usually texture and the rest of the formula: heavy oils, thick silicones or rich emollients can feel greasy by midday. Watery or gel serums tend to layer better under a matte sunscreen.
Oil-soluble forms such as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD) usually come in oil-based or anhydrous formulas. They are not off-limits, but many people with oily skin prefer them at night or in small amounts.
Suitable vitamin C forms
L-ascorbic acid in a water-based serum is a common choice if your skin is not sensitive. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is often formulated for oily and acne-prone skin and is gentler. 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid appears in many lightweight Indian serums.
Using it in a hot, humid climate
Apply a thin layer to clean skin in the morning, let it absorb, then follow with a light moisturiser if you need one and sunscreen. If your skin feels tight or stings, drop to every other day. For acne marks specifically, see our vitamin C guide for acne marks.
Frequently asked questions
+Can vitamin C serum cause breakouts on oily skin?
Vitamin C itself is not known to clog pores, but other ingredients in a formula can. If you break out after starting a new serum, check whether it is oil-heavy and stop using it if the breakouts continue.
+Should oily skin use vitamin C in the morning or at night?
Morning use pairs vitamin C's antioxidant role with sunscreen, which is why it is the usual recommendation. If a serum feels heavy under makeup or sunscreen, using it at night is fine.
